XD Students Minister in New York City

Under the direction of Professor Mike MacNeil, Bethany’s Extreme Discipleship students went to New York City, October 6-13, for a week of ministry to the homeless, poor, oppressed and addicted.  Students worked in local ministry programs at the Bowery Mission, NYC Relief, NYC Rescue Mission, Anchor House Drug Rehab, and Living Water & New Hope churches.   They also ministered to people on the streets, passing out sandwiches, singing in the streets, and praying with people along the way.  Students experienced a mixture of compassionate ministry and evangelistic outreach. One special highlight of the trip was when student Christoph Deutschmann led a man named Jose to Christ on the streets of Harlem.

After ten years, this is the last year for the Extreme Discipleship Program (XD) to be offered.  Starting Fall 2010, Bethany will offer a two-year Associate of Arts degree in Evangelism and Compassion Ministry.  This program will have the same strong experiential component of XD that allows students life-on-life encounters with lost and hurting people in the urban centers, but students are also exposed to diverse social and spiritual issues and a variety of ways of addressing these issues through additional classroom instruction.
